We, the Georgian writers, translators, publishers, book distributors, and all who dedicate our lives to the field of literature, firmly believe that the modern state of Georgia is a legacy built on the dreams, sacrifices, and relentless dedication of Ilia Chavchavadze and countless Georgian public figures who gave everything for their homeland. We believe that the foundation of Georgia’s statehood was laid by the first Georgian non-governmental organization, the “Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians”. Ilia Chavchavadze was not only a staunch opponent of Russian domination but also an unyielding champion of Western ideals and a tireless advocate for the transformative power of education.
The Georgian Dream party’s assault on European integration and on Georgia’s civil society organisations, the government’s attempts to discredit Western democracy, and the blatant falsification of the October 26 election results violate the very principles upon which stands the modern Georgia as a democratic State. By rewriting history, weaponizing Russian propaganda to twist lies into truth, and plunging our citizens into extreme poverty while depriving them of education and violating their fundamental rights, this government wages war against the legacy of Ilia Chavchavadze and countless honorable Georgians. This is also an effort to shatter the dreams and aspirations of the Georgian people.
On October 26, the majority of Georgian citizens – those who represent a genuine, modern European society – cast their votes to end one-party rule in Georgia. This vision embodies both European and Georgian ideals, as our united Georgian state has always thrived on unity within diversity. This vision sought not to suppress anyone but to restore the Georgian people to their rightful place within the European family, striving for genuine civil peace, enduring security, stability, and development.
We will not stand by as the choice of the Georgian people is stolen, nor will we accept the results of an election wholly corrupted by falsification. We promise to fight relentlessly, to the very end, to safeguard Georgia’s identity, modern statehood, and its rightful place in Europe, both now and in the future. For this reason, we demand new, fair, and free elections. We call for the creation of conditions that allow nearly a million Georgians living in exile, our Georgian citizens, to exercise their voting rights and for the opening of as many polling stations abroad as necessary to ensure their voices are heard.
We call on all those who shape the heart and soul of Georgia – artists, scientists, professors, teachers, students, doctors, businesspeople, every person whose daily efforts secure our nation’s present and future – to unite and raise our voices against the oligarch who is leading Georgia toward the destruction with his obsessive thirst to cling to power.
We urge the Georgian people to stand together in defending our past, present, and future from Russian encroachment, peacefully but resolutely, with unwavering principle and purpose – because “Georgia belongs to no one; Georgia is yours!”
